(updated Jan. 7, 2025; original post Jan. 3, 2025)
We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Judith Algeo on Jan. 1, 2025. Judith served on the LASP Board of Directors from 2008 until the time of her passing, and as Board President from 2018-2020. She was a longtime LASP pro bono volunteer and a tremendous mentor to our staff.
A Bucks County family law attorney in Doylestown, she represented individuals in all matters of family law including divorce, child custody, child support, spousal support and alimony, equitable distribution, and Protection from Abuse orders. With her experience as an adoption attorney, she handled both termination of parental rights matters and second parent adoptions. Judith was a family therapist in private practice before beginning her legal career. She held a J.D. from Temple University Beasley School of Law and a B.A. and M.A. from La Salle University.
Judith served on the list of court-approved Bucks County custody mediators. She often represented neglected and abused children as a conflict Guardian Ad Litem. She assisted LASP by representing clients in Protection from Abuse proceedings. Judith was past President of the Bucks County Bar Association (BCBA) and served several terms on its Board of Directors. She served many years as Warwick Township Board of Supervisors Chairperson. She was the past President of the Bucks County Association of Township Officials (BCATO) and served on the Board of Directors.
“She supported LASP in many ways beyond her position on the Board, from mentoring staff, advocating for LASP with the Bucks County Commission, and locating new space for us after Bucks County sold the space we occupied at 50 N. Main Street in Doylestown,” said Shawn Boehringer, LASP Executive Director.
“Judith's kindness, sense of humor, dedication to family, commitment to public service, zealous advocacy skills, and political acumen were all exemplary, and she will be long remembered,” he said. “The mission of a legal aid program was not a partisan issue for Judith. She believed in our work. She believed in those lofty ideals we strive to incorporate into the culture at LASP: that our work is essentially to defend human rights, that our clients deserve freedom from want and freedom from fear, that everyone is entitled to due process and a level playing field, and that having a lawyer is an indispensable necessity to ensuring that there is equal access to justice.
"Judith also had exemplary leadership skills. She was empathetic yet assertive. She was always available to consult on a sticky issue, and she without hesitation supported initiatives that would benefit staff well-being and morale."
Randi Riefner, longtime LASP Paralegal based in the Bristol Office in Bucks County, noted, “Judith was a great friend to Legal Aid, but more than that she was a compassionate advocate to all those she represented. She will be missed both professionally and personally. I was honored to have worked with her.”
Francis J. Sullivan, Bucks County attorney, observed, “Judith was an amazing person who had the most brilliant smile. Her zeal and dedication to the advancement of the Bucks County Bar Association and the Foundation was unwavering. We all will miss you Judith.”
